                                                         5th Annual Operation Cookie Drop

Another year has come and another military unit helping to preserve and protect our freedoms will be receiving gifts from complete strangers. On Sunday the 15 of November 2009, 75 people gathered at the Devens Commons Center and went about the task of sorting thru mountains of donated goods, The first task was to separate the personal care from the snack items and to take care of the most precious cargo, hundreds of dozens of homemade cookies, all to be sorted and then shrink wrapped to insure they are fresh and undamaged when the arrive in a mountainous region somewhere in Afghanistan.

During this process Lt. Col Brian Neil and Sgt Major Andy Tomelleri from the 25th Marines stationed on Devens showed up and offered words of praise and encouragement for the gathered volunteers. Col. Neil in his remarks stated “We see the ribbons on the cars and we hear the thanks for your service and it is all appreciated, but to see a group of people who have obviously done the hard work to pull something like this together and then to gather on a Sunday to stage this, is noteworthy. I have been one of the fortunate Marines to receive a box like this when I was deployed and it means a great deal to know a complete stranger was behind this. I want to thank you and to let you know that the Marines receiving these packages will use every item.”.

Frank Devan, the Chair of the Shirley RTC and Beverly Schultz, the Chair of the Ayer RTC both agreed that the list of people who assisted in this endeavor is getting almost too long to mention, but noted that each participant would be receiving official recognition. Some of the key participants needing to be pointed out, for their support and generosity are. Mike Egan and the Devens Common Center;: John/Eileen Gailey and the Devens Grill; Mrs, Charlene Shorey representing the Shirley School District; Ann Kahn and the Shirley PTA; Dan Rau and Paul Gauffin from the State Line Gun Shop; Hub International; Bemis Associates; The Rotary Club of Fitchburg East; John Sannicandro/Marlene Dienst and Dunkin Donuts; Doug/Sandy Crossman and Sonoco; Ray Larochelle and Weston Printing; Connie/Jan Sullivan; Mark Prokowiew and the Paper Store. And to all of the donators and volunteers know that the efforts are worthwhile. Mr. Devan concluded by saying that he was in receipt of an email from one of the Marines mom’s who would be receiving one of these and she wrote  “Last year I conducted two different packing’s to our guys. Over 1300 bags each time. I know the work and preparation involved in a huge task like
this one. But it was a labor of love because I was supporting my son as well. To see complete strangers doing the same just makes me want to break down and cry. Especially since my own son is in Echo (Easy) company and will be a recipient to your gift. I can't explain how much this has touched me. It is not going to be easy spending the holidays with out our loved ones Nor will it be easy on them being away from family. However, with support from people back home makes our hearts a little lighter. We know our son's and husbands will feel the love of many even when they are surrounded by hate. Please tell all of your volunteers that their kindness is not taken lightly. I offer you all my sincere appreciation. I will pray for each and everyone of you tonight as I pray for our troops. I only wish saying Thank You was enough. But somehow it seems minimal. Please know that you made my day but more importantly You will make theirs!”

The final stop for these precious 200 plus boxes will be on Tuesday the 17th as a much smaller group delivers these to the Ayer Post Office assist in preparing them for shipping and gets a potential date for the unit to receive the cargo. This will allow the unit to be alerted that Santa’s helpers, who the will probably never meet, sent a special thanks for their efforts.

                                        5th Annual Operation Cookie Drop announced;

Each of the last four years, the Shirley Republican Town Committee organizes Operation Cookie Drop and this year will be no exception. On November 15th 2009 a large group of volunteers will gather at the Devens Conference Center from 9a.m until the job is finished and go about the process of packing boxes for a forward deployed military unit, serving in harms way in Afghanistan. The timing of this event will insure that members of the receiving unit will have something to open during the Christmas Holiday period.

The care packages will include all sorts of personal care items, snacks and the hallmark of this event, at least one dozen homemade cookies, as well as Holiday cards made by local grade schools.

Newly elected Committee Chair, and prior service member, Frank Devan stated “We intend to continue to carry on this tradition, started by my predecessor Kendra Dumont, as our way of giving a little something to those who are out there protecting our freedoms. To receive something like this when you are stationed far away from home and during the Holidays means so much, it lets the service member know that we still care.”

For those interested in becoming part of this worthwhile project, here is a brief listing of the items that are being sought;

Devan stated “We need small individually wrapped items, larger packaged items (Like family packs) will not stay fresh and are harder and more costly to ship. A rule of thumb would be if it can be put in a pocket and won’t spoil or melt. Socks are also in very high demand as the forward deployed units have no laundry capacity. Pork and pork by-products are not permitted to be shipped to Middle East locations, nor is fruit or yeast.

The best items to send are non-perishable food items. Based on surveys of the troops, these are some of the examples of the items in demand”
FOOD ITEMS, (individual servings); Coffee, Hot a mixes, Coffee mixes, Tea, Beef Jerky/Slim Jims, Dried Fruits, Crackers, Velveeta/Cheese spreads, Cheese n Cracker packets, Individual servings of powdered drink mixes, Pop-Tarts Cereal and Granola Bars, Power Bars, Protein Bars, Nutritional Bars, Pringles, small Bags of Snack Items like nuts, sunflower seeds, trail mix, Canned Cheese Dips, Easy Mac and Cheese, Hard Candies, Mints, Chewing Gum, Life Savers,Cup of Soups, Ravioli, or Raman Soup packets
PERSONAL CARE ITEMS, Aloe Vera Lotion, Antacid Tablets, Aspirin, Tylenol, or Motrin, OTC Pain Relievers,  Baby or Foot Powders, Boot Insoles, Vaseline,  Throat Lozenges, Blistex, Chap Stick, Lip Balm, Jock Itch Medication, Sun Block, Lotrimin AF or Athletes Foot Ointment, Eye Drops, Saline Spray, Nail Clippers/Files, Dental Floss, Toothbrushes, and Toothpaste, Vitamins, Q-Tips, Disposable Razors,  Neosporin, Pocket Combs, Kleenex, Toilet Paper, Baby Wipes (used to bath in remote locations), Shampoo and Soap,

Last Years shipping costs exceeded $1,200.00, this year the costs are expected to escalate based on an increase in postal costs, therefore anyone interested in making a financial donation to offset the largest of the cost involved in this undertaking can make a check payable directly to the United States Post Office.

Mr Devan concluded by saying, “For those interested in baking cookies we need to have a name, phone number and cookie type with the cookies, all the home baked cookies will be shrink wrapped at the staging location so they will survive the shipping. Additionally any item that are donated and cannot be shipped will be given to our local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes, to help the less fortunate during the Holidays. For those who cannot make it to the packing location and need to have their generous donations picked up, or for further information contact Bryan Dumont at 978-425-2726 or bgd123@comcast.net

                                                 Congratulations Are In Order
The Shirley Republican Town Committee would like to congratulate our new Selectman Kendra Dumont. Mrs Dumont selfless service over the years has benefited the town of Shirley and the surrounding community. Her accomplishments include 4 operation cookie drops for our deployed Freedom Fighters, donation drives for loaves and fishes, Clean a Street and scholarships for Shirley Students. We look forward to her implementing her common sense solutions to address the town's problems. Her goals of transparency in government, excellence in education, and fiscal responsibility will put Shirley back on track. We are confident in Mrs. Dumont's ability to tackle tough problems and make the right choices for our town. We are proud to have Her as our new Selectman.

                        Shirley RTC sends Letter to the RNC Chair and MAGOP Chair Nassour;

Chairman Steele,

By now you should be aware of the outrageous actions on the part of the Chair of the MAGOP, Ms. Jennifer Nassour. Recently in an extremely militant pro gay periodical she announced, that the MAGOP under her “leadership” was “steering clear of social issues and focusing on fiscal issues." This periodical has historically attacked Republicans in general and Massachusetts Republicans in particular. Her actions in caving in to a 3% vocal minority is clearly pandering and excludes honest hard working, moral republicans in Massachusetts who believe the “social Issues” that Ms. Nassour cavalierly dismisses is what separates us from the other political party.

Ms Nassour and her shrinking monitory of supporters would indicate that Republicans need to be more centrists. That argument is disingenuous and is the reason for the complete failure of the MAGOP. Since the William Weld era (The same William Weld who endorsed Barrack Obama) the MAGOP has lost its principles and values to become more centrist. It is no coincidence that the number of registered Republicans in this state has been steadily declining and so have the number of elected Republicans.

This most recent assault on Republicans within the state was preceded by her announcement that Republican candidates would not be receiving financial assistance from the Party, but rather “resources”. And her announcement that the MAGOP would not necessarily support a pro-life candidate, if a better “republican” candidate was available who happened to be pro-choice. Ms. Nassour then interjected herself in a Republican sponsored transportation bill on Beacon Hill and opposed the majority of Republicans working the legislation in favor of a minority opinion, without so much as alerting the majority Republican coalition of her intentions. Ms. Nassour’s actions have only served to undermine the MAGOP and prove to be in conflict with the National and State party platform and bring shame upon the Republican Party in general, the MAGOP in particular. These actions are in gross violation of the principles and ideals that made the Republican Party a great party. Her actions are in direct conflict with her primary duty which is advancing a republican agenda and representing the values and ideals of our party. It is therefore necessary that we demand the immediate resignation of Ms. Nassour as Chair of the MAGOP! If she refuses, we ask you to intercede and remove the chair and either appoint a true Republican or allow for an election by either the State Committee and/or registered Republicans in the state. This will allow the party to proceed with rebuilding prior to the 2010 election cycle.

Respectfully,
Francis J Devan Jr
Chairman Shirley RTC

Loaves and Fishes December 2008 Donations

Kendra Dumont smiled and greeted many of the people that showed up on 6 December at the Devens Conference Center to drop off donations to Loaves and Fishes. At the end of the mornings activities 20 boxes of much needed materials were donated to our local pantry, Loaves and Fishes, to provide items to those less fortunate.

"We were able to collect a large amount of food items, snack items, and personal care items from a large group, to numerous to mention and some folks who dropped items off and specifically did not want any public mention, they just wanted to help or wanted to do something for someone else. These were a few of the comments made which renews your faith in people." said Mrs. Dumont.

At the end of the event a large pick up truck was filled above the roof and in all the space in the passenger compartment and driven to Loaves and Fishes, where Kay Tohline, a volunteer was waiting to receive the truck. Three men spent twenty minutes off loading the much needed cargo into the warehouse area, where it would be later sorted and stocked and await the next group of people who were in need.

Mrs. Dumont said "In the end the people who helped know who they are, and know they have insured that other families, less fortunate will have a better day as a result of the efforts and donations made."

Fourth Annual Operation Cookie Drop, December 2008

Filled with the truest meaning of the holiday season, 31 volunteers from Shirley, Ayer and Pepperell and some as far away as Taunton and the Cape, gathered at the Devens Conference Center on Saturday, 6 December to complete the 4th Annual Operation Cookie Drop. Volunteers started gathering as early as 830 in order to off load all of the donated goods and stage them in preparation of sorting and packing, by 9am the event was under way!

Three areas were set up, one for the personal care items, one for snack and food items and the third area for the most precious cargo, homemade cookies.

Work began in earnest and with more donations showing up throughout the morning, packing was completed by 1230. Each box contained one dozen homemade cookies, an assortment of candy and gums, Hot Coco, Hot Coffee and Teas, Cheese and Crackers and personal care items that included razors, toothbrush, toothpastes, mouthwashes, handi-wipes, shaving cream and for the four women assigned to one of the units, special packages were made that included lotions, nail files and clippers. And equally special were the Christmas cards made by 1-6 graders from Lancaster, Shirley, Ayer, and donated by Bemis and Wachusett's Brewing children, enough for 2 cards for each soldier. The 200 boxes were ready to be shipped to an Army Reserve Unit of 100 men and a Seabee unit of 96 men and 4 women that are forward deployed in Afghanistan.

Kendra Dumont, the Chair of the Shirley Republican Town Committee and organizer of the event, expressed thanks to the other members of her committee for their participation and all the others who volunteered their time and effort for this event. Of note are the following corporate sponsors; The Devens Conference Center and Mr. Mike Egan for the use of the room. Bemis International, Ms. Eileen Madigan and employees of Bemis for their financial donation, Christmas Cards and donated food and snack items. Wachusett Brewing, Pam Bisson, the owners and employees, for their financial donation and cards. Mr. Ray Larochelle, owner of Weston Printing for his financial donation. Ms. Elaine Gailey, Co-owner of the Devens Grill for their continued support. Ms. Gail Stickior and Renee Robinson, from the Mary Rowlandson Elementary School, Lancaster for work in collecting snacks and food items and children's Christmas Cards. Mrs Shorey's 1st Grade Class at Laura White School in Shirley, for their cards. And SONOCO/GILLETTE for their continued support of this effort with personal care items, razors, travel bags and other materials.

Mrs. Dumont indicated that all the financial donations would be used to offset the cost of shipping, expected to be over $1,300.00 and stated that all the participants of the event would be receiving a certificate for their participation in this years efforts. She concluded by saying that it's always touching reading the children's sentiments on the cards. This year was particularly emotional and reassuring when a service member, attending an event in another portion of the Conference Center came into the room and stated that last Christmas he was on the receiving end of one of these boxes and wanted all to know how much they meant to someone overseas and to express his thanks for the groups efforts. "When you are told something like that, by someone who received a package, it makes all the effort worthwhile."

                                                               OUR NEXT EFFORT

Kendra Dumont, The Chair of the Shirley Republican Town Committee announced that the Republican Town Committee is going to sponsor the fourth annual Operation Cookie Drop! And going to also be collecting food and other items to support Loaves and Fishes. Donations for either or both endeavors can be picked up at your home or can be dropped of at the Devens Conference Center on Saturday December 6th 2008, between 9am and 12pm.

Ms. Dumont stated the reason for continuing Operation Cookie Drop is simple “This time of year is potentially the loneliest for our men and woman fighting for our rights and our freedoms overseas. It is the holidays and they are over there and missing their loved ones, friends and family. As a country or a community, we need to show these young men and woman they are not forgotten and we do care!”

“We have identified a United States Army Reserve and a Seabee. unit, each unit is forward deployed in Afghanistan, each containing local people and each unit is 100 strong. We will be receiving and packing all of the donated materials and shipping in time for the Christmas Holiday Season. The trademark of this enterprise is the MOST appreciated by the service men and women, we effort to provide at least one dozen home made cookies to each service member.

Additionally we try and collect personal care items, toothbrushes, toothpaste, non-scented deodorants, socks, and disposable razors. As well as food items, (personal sized) Coffee, Hot Cocoa mix, Coffee Mixes, Tea, Beef Jerky, Crackers, Powdered drinks (i.e Kool-Aid, Gatorade, Propel, Pre sweetened – individual servings) Pop Tarts, Granola & Cereal Bars, Power Bars, Protein Bars, Nutritional Bars, Pringles, small bags of snacks or individually wrapped snacks such as nuts, sunflower seeds, peanuts, trail mix, canned cheese dips, Easy Mac & cheese, hard candy , chewing gum, life savers, mints,Cup of Soup, Ravioli items, and Ramen Noodles. The most expensive part of this endeavor is shipping to our troops, it has to go through the post office and we have averaged $900.00-$1,200.00 to ship at each of the prior three Cookie Droops we have done.

One of the most well received items is Christmas Cards, particularly from Children. These are the most commented on item, and are read and re-read among all the troops receiving packages. We encourage any grade school to become involved and provide cards from children, we will insure they get into each box sent to the troops.”

Ms. Dumont continued by saying that “We are short on time so we are also going to try and collect for our Loaves and Fishes, one need only look at the economy to answer why we would do this, our fellow citizens are hurting, if we are able, we should help folks in their time of need. Loaves and Fishes supports an ever-growing list of communities and their list of people looking for help is expanding. They are a top shelf organization and our support of them during the holiday season supports those less fortunate. We are going to try and collect, canned goods, dry goods, paper towels, cereals, anything that you would have in your home for day to day living. We will pick up any items prior to the 6th and will also be available to receive donated items on the 6th at the Devens Conference Center from 9am to 12pm, then we will get it delivered on the 6th to Loaves and Fishes, on Devens in time to re-stock their shelves after the Thanksgiving rush and in time for Christmas! Anyone desiring to donate for either worthwhile project can reach me at 978-425-2726 or email my5dogs@comcast.net. We are sincerely hoping that in these difficult financial times people will open their hearts and wallets to give to one or both of these worthy causes

                                IMPORTANT PENDING BILL FOR SHIRLEY

1. Shirley, like every town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is struggling to make ends meet. Currently there is a bill being battled behind the scenes, that could help send a much need infusion of cash to every single city and town in Massachusetts! The democrat majority for reasons known only to them, are fighting this.

House Docket # 4651, Massachusetts Municipal Finance Relief Act of 2007, which is being fought in the back rooms of Beacon Hill, would take $450,000,000 from the Commonwealth’s Stabilization Fund, (that contains surplus revenue in the billions) and divide that up to all 351 cities and towns in the State. Shirley would receive a very much needed $696,571 with which we could make improvements to our roads, purchase new equipment, and more wisely put all or a portion of it into Shirley’s “rainy day” fund.

Our Republican Town Committee urges every resident of Shirley to contact our elected representatives in the State (State Senator Pam Resor @ 617-772-1120, or State Representative James Eldridge @ 617-772-2060) and insist they insure passage of this important legislation.

Once this Bill passes we then urge our town fathers to use this money wisely, not for salaries or staff additions in any department, but rather to support those in need, to purchase or repair old equipment, or to save this money in our rainy day fund to offset any potential future issue as they may arise. The Republican Town Committee will be pushing our State officials hard, for passage and monitoring our local elected officials to insure the wisest possible use of these funds, to impact a better quality of life for all Shirley residents.

Released to the press

On Saturday the 21st at 8.a.m, while people were getting ready to start their weekend activities with family and friends, two pickup trucks loaded with boxes pulled up in front of the Devens Commons Center, the drivers were greeted by Mike Egan, General Manager, who donated rooms for the days events and showed the drivers where to drop off their precious cargo. In the minutes that passed more people arrived with homemade cookies, snack items and monitory donations and a group of 30 started the task at hand, sorting and separating personal care items from snack items and the trademark of this third get together, homemade cookies, needing to be sorted, broken down into units of one dozen and shrink wrapped.

For people who had not attended the last two Cookie Drop efforts, the looks on their faces said it all, a combination of awe looking at the sheer amount of donations and being overwhelmed by the controlled chaos as box after box was opened the contents laid out, sorted into like items then moved to another area for packaging. Five volunteers in the back of the room barely looked up as they sorted and shrink-wrapped cookies, two more people steadily completed the customs paperwork for every box being shipped and three gentleman running for elective office rolled up their sleeves and set about doing whatever was asked to assist. Jeff Beatty a U.S. Senate candidate, brought in a camcorder and recorded each volunteers name, where they were from and a message to the troops, some amusing, some emotional, all heartfelt. "This will be included in one of the shipping boxes to let our troops know they are loved, missed and thought of every day", Beatty told the gathered volunteers.

A reception table was set up and everyone who contributed anything was identified so that formal recognition could be made. Kendra Dumont, Chair of the Shirley Republican Town Committee related "There is absolutely nothing political in making sure our troops get remembered every day. They are keeping us safe the least we can do, as a group is to let them know we think about them often." Laurie and Kevin Hayes, were all smiles as they explained that they are the proud parents of one of the Marines in the unit receiving this shipment. Laurie stated "This is awesome, each year we do this, it gets bigger and this year my son is there and this is his unit, this is very special to us."

Recognition needs to be made to the following people who gave of their time and money to insure the 3rd Cookie Drop was a success; Bemis Associates Inc; Devens Common Center; Devens Grill; Sonoco; Wachusett Brewing Company; The employees of Hub International; Pepperell RTC U.S. Senate Candidate Jeff Beatty; Ma State Senate Candidate Steven Levy; 37th Middlesex District Candidate Kurt Hayes; Kevin/Laurie Hayes; Bryan/Kendra Dumont, Warren/Pamela Bisson; Dan/Karen Rau; Joseph Sheehan; Brian Bernhard; John/Elaine/Lauren/John Jr. Gailey; Colleen Smith; Bill O'Connell; Mike/Leah/Nick/Jarred O'Leary; James T. On June 5 2008 The Shirley Republican Town Committee presented its First annual scholarship "Shirley's Future Fund" to two deserving Shirley seniors, Mr. Brendon M Couturier, and Ms. Kathleen M. Roy both graduating from Lunenburg High School.

During the presentation ceremony, held at the Lunenburg High School Kendra Dumont, Chair of the Town Committee stated "We decided several months ago to try and recognize the achievements of some of our Shirley Students and came up with a non-political way to do this called the Shirley's Future Fund. It was created to provide a little something for these young men and woman as they will be Shirley's and our country's future. The selection process was a very difficult decision for us as we met with 2 different groups of seniors and a total of seven great kids, We based our final decision on input from the schools and the students enthusiasm, motivation and community service."

Each recipient received a certificate and check to help defray some of the costs of higher education. Local Shirley Business's too include Custom Courier and Sentry Security & Investigations donated to the fund.

Kendra stated that "We hope to involve more business's making contributions and more schools and students in the future. We see this as a way to recognize students for their community involvement and then reward Shirley's future leaders. We will track this years recipients and if the donations are available we'll continue to support them through their college life as well as identifying worthy students each year. It is simply the right thing to do and with any luck they will come back to Shirley and help lead our town into the future."

The Shirley Republican Town Committee would like to congratulate our newest selectman Mr. Andy Deveau.

And offer a heartfelt congratulations to all those who ran for what sometimes is a thankless job in a small town. We would also like to wish all those well, who have served our community in the past in elected, non elected and volunteer positions.

Mr. Deveau brings with him positive energy and an upbeat attitude, refreshing to say the least. Our Town Committee stands ready to assist in whatever way we can to improve the quality of life for Shirley Residents.

Times are indeed tough for the citizens as well as town finances, focus should be paid on higher elected officials to get back into Shirley what Shirley has coming. Our Republican Town committee is ready to support our town in these times, a positive energy, thinking outside of the box, and the elimination of the “it can’t be done attitude” will help Shirley flourish far into the future.

2. 2007 A Year In Review........YOUR Republican Town Committees Efforts.. A brief moment to reflect on what YOUR Town Committee accomplished!

a. The State Committee Chair Debate; On 11 Jan 2007 and in conjunction with the MRA the Shirley RTC sponsored a debate among the candidates for the Chair of the State Republican party. this was also announced and covered locally and brought people from surrounding areas to our area.

b. We contracted and had a web site designed by an entity called FILETACTICS. This website speaks for itself and our cost is covered by our advertisers, who are also receivng business as a result of their ads..We have email comments to that effect.

c. We had Stationary designed using a Shirley Landmark. as our logo

d. “Welcome to Shirley” Letter; we get the names of the folks moving in and send them a welcome letter.

e. Happy Birthday or Happy Graduation Letter; We send every resident child in town a letter to when they reach their 18th Birthday The Town has reported An “unknown” spike in youth registering to vote, and it is beingattributed to these letters, as nothing else is being accomplished by any other entity we also see a spike in hits on the Web site.

f. Operation “Cookie Drop”; Last year the RTC took part in this with the Shirley American Legion leading the charge. We challenged each other and came up with 50 dozen cookies and related stuffers for a forward deployed military unit. A local conference center has donated a room(s) for the day for staging purposes, A local luxury motel is donating personal care items and a large chain, supermarket with a branch in our neighboring town is donating other snack and related items. Each troop in our selected and forward deployed unit received a packet that included Christmas/Holiday cards, made by a local grade school! Released to the press

Off in some distant corner of Iraq, in harms way, a group of some two hundred United States Marines will be receiving special holiday packages which will hopefully make a brief period of their 24/7 lives a little bit special, let them know complete strangers support and care about them, and give them a taste of home for the holidays. The Shirley Republican Town Committee, chaired by Kendra Dumont and a group of concerned citizens from Ayer lead by Ed Orr worked tirelessly over the last month to insure these particular Marines were not forgotten. 2.The Truest Meaning of The Holidays

Released to the press

The Holidays are the busiest of times for most area residents, sharing the best that this time of year has to offer with family and friends, planning family festivities and looking forward to giving and getting. There are those among us who do not share these feelings of joy and celebration, rather they are concerned with providing a meal and some small gift to those near and dear to them. Our local papers brought our attention to those in need and a organization willing to provide that service. The Shirley Republican Town Committee, with the help of a caring community answered the call and it’s members got to experience, first hand, the truest meaning of the holidays. On December 1 , Republican Town Committee members organized by the Chair, Kendra Dumont, traveled throughout Shirley, Ayer and as far away as Acton and Westford picking food items up from people who wanted to give a little something to those with a little less. Arriving at the local Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in mid-afternoon an entire pick-up truck full of donated items including Turkeys, Dry goods, Fruit Juices, Pastas, Cereal, canned fruits and vegetables and much more was released to a grateful Loaves and Fishes staff.Committee members got a tour of the facility and found out that Loaves and Fishes supports 7 surrounding communities, not only with food, but educational opportunities, health initiatives, clothing, and during the Holiday Season provides toys for parents to give to their children as well as gift items for children to give to their parents. Kendra Dumont observed that not many people are aware of all the outstanding services that are provided and was especially touched by the gift area and stated that this committee will endeavor to help again. She also expressed grateful appreciation to all those that gave in support of this effort and will be sending personal thanks from the committee to those who gave of their time and money to make another families holidays a special time.

3. The Shirley Republican Town Committee would like to thank our newest Selectman, Enrico Cappucci and long time School Committee Board Member, Paul Wilson for attending our meeting on 27 August 2007. Both were interesting and informative. Mr. Cappucci’s message of transparency in town government is very appealing and a refreshing change from the status quo . We believe when a town resident steps up to the plate and really works for better town government, at the end of the day their party affiliation is less important than the good work they are doing. Both Mr. Cappucci and Mr. Wilson have made many sacrifices and have worked hard for our town. Our committee thanks both gentleman for their appearance and hard work..

4. The Shirley Republican Town Committee is excited to announce that they are the second RTC in the State to officially endorse Jeff Beatty for his run in 2008 for U.S. Senate against John Kerry. After the unanimous vote Beatty called in to thank his supporters I want to thank you all for your endorsement I’m truly honored by your support. We can do better and with your help we will, God Bless you all. Kendra Dumont, the RTC Chair, commented that she was pleased with the vote Mr. Beatty was here last month and made a positive impression with the membership and guests, He is the right man for these times. Jeff Beatty, who has formed an Exploratory Committee to consider the Senate run, has a lifetime of public service as a decorated veteran and Purple Heart recipient. He is the first person to have served with all 3 of the U.S.’s most elite anti-terrorism units: Delta Force Assault Troop Commander in the first Blackhawk shot down; Special Agent of the FBI, advising the FBI National Hostage Rescue Team; a CIA Counter-terrorism Officer with service primarily running successful operations against terrorists and nations hostile to the United States. Since leaving government service, Jeff Beatty has been an active small businessman and homeland security consultant designing training programs for over 500,000 Americans to help keep our citizens safe. To that end on Saturday, 15 September, members of the committee participated in Operation Street Clean, Starting at the Shirley Train Station and going to the Harvard town line on Front Street (Shirley Strip) both sides of the street were cleaned, refuse collected and properly disposed of. “It is amazing what some people simply throw out of their car or just leave on public property, from regular trash to car parts. This road, for many people is the main access to our town, this is what people first see of Shirley, people should remember that before littering.” Said one committee member. “Next spring we will again coordinate with the Town Highway Department and identify another town road in need of a good cleaning” said Kendra Dumont the Chair of the Committee. The Committee also expressed thanks Mr. Lynch, Superintendent of the Shirley Highway Department for taking time from his busy schedule to insure a drop off area was provided and for establishing the safety briefing and the guidelines for the clean up area.” And drop off we did, 17 bags of trash were collected and put in the town dumpster!

The evening was completed by a very motivated Massachusetts State Senator, the Honorable Bruce Tarr who made us all feel great to be a Republican in Massachusetts. The evening was concluded with Mr. Beatty leading the sold out event in a rousing and emotional rendition of God Bless America
